Our 100% Organic Cotton Range: the ethical facts

100% Organic Cotton T-shirtOur Sapling Collection of 100% super-soft organic cotton clothing, has a very special place in our heart for so many reasons.

Firstly, for every single garment purchased, we will plant a tree in our Word Forest in Kenya.

Secondly, you can put them on the minute you rip them out of their packaging because they’re chemical-free and completely safe for your delicate skin. Plus, every item sold gives a positive growth spurt to the organic cotton trade: read Katherine Martinko’s recent feature on Treehugger for a few eye opening shocks about conventional cotton production.

Just in case you need a third reason, our exclusive, funky designs convey really positive messages about the world’s urgent need for more trees.

As well as producing gorgeous apparel, the factory that makes our garments, tick all the boxes for ethical corporate social responsibility too:

At their HQ factory in India, management abide by the fact that their workers have rights to be in a safe and healthy work environment and they have a robust policy with regard to the following CSR criteria:

  • No use of child labour
  • No use of forced labour
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Legal labour contracts
  • Payment of living wage
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • No discrimination against employees
  • No excessive hours of work

Additionally, the overall carbon footprint of our garments has been reduced by around 90% through a combination of innovative product design, low impact organic agriculture, efficiency in manufacturing and by replacing standard grid electricity with renewable wind power. The footprint calculations at the factory are certified by Carbon Trust Certifications here in the UK and as a consequence, all of our organic products carry the registered ‘Climate Neutral’ labelling.

The factory has been running a pro-active social responsibility programme as a member of the Fair Wear Foundation since early 2006. All the company’s manufacturing facilities are regularly audited for social compliance and are running active monitoring programmes in accordance with standards advocated by the International Labour Organisation, the Ethical Trading Initiative and with other international bodies.

Our whole ethos at The Word Forest Organisation resonates around being kind to the planet, so finding partners who think the same way as we do really matters; now we are delighted to pass our assurances onto you.

It’s a top job all round.
