As a small charity with a big mission—reforesting the tropics and protecting communities on the frontlines of climate change—we rarely comment on global trade policy. But when international decisions begin to ripple through the systems we depend on, it’s important to share what that means for our work—and how our supporters can help.
Last week, the U.S. administration announced sweeping new tariffs on goods from major global economies, including the EU, China, the UK, and Israel. While these policies are primarily aimed at rebalancing trade, they also risk triggering economic instability, rising prices, and political tensions across the globe.
For Word Forest, and organisations like ours, these changes aren’t just headlines. They touch nearly every aspect of our mission:
Supply Chain Disruption
Even small-scale reforestation relies on a complex web of tools, materials, and partnerships. Rising costs for equipment, imported supplies, or shipping—even if indirect—can stretch already-tight project budgets. A spade costing 10% more may not sound like much, but when you’re planting thousands of trees, every penny counts.
Cross-Border Collaboration
Many of our strongest relationships are with organisations and donors around the world. These tariffs could strain international partnerships, delay shared projects, or make it harder to access certain resources. We’re watching closely and adapting as needed, but these headwinds make collaboration harder, not easier.
Economic Pressures on Donors
We know our supporters are feeling the pinch. With the cost of living rising, especially in the U.S. and UK, some households and businesses may find it harder to give. We completely understand—and we’re more grateful than ever for every contribution, no matter the size.
A Deeper Case for Trees
There is a silver lining. As global systems become more fragile, the case for localised, regenerative solutions grows stronger. Reforestation isn’t just about beauty or biodiversity—it’s about climate resilience, food security, and building sustainable futures. Trees offer long-term strength in the face of short-term disruption.
That’s why your support matters now more than ever.
We’re continuing to plant, educate, and empower—with every tree we grow, we sow hope. But we can’t do it without you. If you’re able to give, share, or simply spread the word, you’re helping build a more stable, greener future for us all.
With gratitude and determination,
The Word Forest Team
